Be My Guest
Back in November 1976, three Rochdale lads — Chris, Alan and Ken — were making their way home from the Electric Circus in Collyhurst, having just witnessed a gig by The Damned.
“We’ve got to form a band,” said Chris…
Three rehearsals in a church hall later, and Physical Wrecks were born, ready to unleash their fast, loud, irreverent and aggressive sound on the world — well, on the North West at least.
Notable support slots for, among others, The Adverts, Warsaw and The Drones followed, as well as the band notching up a punk first by playing the Deeply Dale Festival.
The band ripped it up regularly across 1977, before Alan and Ken opted to carry on their musical ambitions with a subsequent band, Local Heroes.
But unfinished business remained.
In 2015, Alan and Ken teamed up with Chris again to reform Physical Wrecks, imagining how the band would have evolved if they’d carried on.
New songs, two Deeply Vale reunion gigs, and support gigs with The Drones and The Fall followed, as well as two new albums: Groovy Times and lockdown album Cosmetic Ideology.
The band is currently working on a third album.
How It Came Together
“Physical Wrecks are good friends of ours, me and Glenn having met them when we were in The Drones, touring for the 40th anniversary of punk in 2016.
The Wrecks were on the same bill as us for a couple of gigs and made a big impression, so it was a no-brainer to have them on the album.
‘Horror Show’ was originally part of a double Wrecks single release alongside the track ‘Seemingly Gutteratzi’.
For Stan’s Guest List, the guys sent us the stems from their 2019 recording of ‘Horror Show’, which consisted of Chris and Alan’s vocals, Alan’s guitar and Ken’s keyboards.
The next stage was for me to lay down drums and Liam to add bass at Red Wall Studio in Bury, before Glenn topped it off with ‘synth’ slide guitar on the chorus to create a totally new version.
Incidentally, Glenn’s bit was recorded in his kitchen — just before teatime — while Ed mixed the final track in the garage.
There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as they say.”
